Development of a Low-Depth Modular GHX through a Real-Scale Experiment

The global energy sector is aiming to rapidly transform systems into those less dependent on fossil fuels reduce their harmful effects the climate. Although ground source heat pump (GSHP) are more efficient than conventional air-source (ASHP) systems, high initial investment cost, particularly for a vertical closed-loop type exchanger (GHX), makes it difficult incorporate them small buildings. This paper proposes low-depth modular GHX reducing cost and improving workability of GSHPs. A cubical structure comprising tubes buried using an excavator at depth 4 m below surface. manufactured factory, carried by truck, then installed lift or backhoe such that can be in buildings narrow spaces low depths underground. In this research, performance feasibility analyses GHXs were conducted via real-scale experiment. results demonstrate influences GSHPs 91% during heating period 70% cooling period. contrast HVAC, could recover costs years 10 years, respectively.
